Four things are preventing me from moving towards a complete Ubuntu desktop for my home use.
They are:
1. Zero support for Securemote.
2. Poor wireless lan support to my NetGear router / firewall.
3. No ventrilo support.
4. EVE-Online not possible.
Everything else is fine though some MPEG-4 videos are a bit choppy. Games support in Ubuntu is still quite poor though they've managed to get EVE-Online to work but only with the latest nVidia cards. I have been dual booting between XP and Ubuntu now for about six months.
++Zero support for Securemote++
While the Ubuntu client has a Terminal Services / remote desktop client; which is great. I would love to RD to my work servers from home like I normally would with my XP laptop. However, it does appear that there is NO support for Securemote for Ubuntu or indeed any other version of Linux. Posts on the Ubuntu forums and other forums; there doesn't appear to be a native support for it and the last time it was supported was with RedHat 7.3
The current thinking is to use a windows box with Securemote installed and for one to use PuTTy to connect to it via SSH. A bit long-winded and I want to do away with having a Windows box.
++Poor wireless lan support to my NetGear router / firewall++
A real bug-bear for me. I have a WLAN card that is fully supported by Ubuntu and a netgear firewall / wireless router that is also supported. It is to do with the encryption I have on the firewall. If I remove it, the WLAN work fine but with it on, the damn thing refuses to connect and forever asks me for the 64/128-bit shared key. A key that I know is correct. Christ, I have used that key so many times, I can recite it. So it appears that the it doesn't like the encryption and I was hoping that with Ubuntu 7.10 - that it would work.
Bah. I have to use a wire to connect and it's a hassle. Windows XP? Works fine.
++No ventrilo support++
I love online games and I use Ventrilo as my main chat client. Ventrilo is not yet supported by Ventrilo and it's a pain for me. TeamSpeak is but I opted for Ventrilo because it is clearer. There are other alternatives such as mumble but I want ventrilo!
Linux support for Ventrilo is still under development. Bah.
++EVE-Online not possible++
Actually, it is but one needs the latest cards (nVidia ideally) to get the thing in full glory. I have an older nVidia card and Ubuntu does not support it, even under the restricted drivers. Under Windows XP however, all is fine.
